Recommended Books (Autism/ASD)

The following are books that I’ve read which address autism, Asperger syndrome [Aspergers], or ASD. They are categorized by audience and I’ve indicated which of the characters in a novel has autism, Aspergers, or ASD.*

Children/Young Adult

Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of A Tree (Lauren Tarshis) / main character

Rules (Cynthia Lord) / sibling

Al Capone Does My Shirts (Gennifer Choldenko) / sibling

Mockingbird (Kathryn Erskine) / main character

Against the Odds (Marjolijn Hof) / main character

Colin Fischer (A. E. Milller/Z. Stentz) / main character

London Eye Mystery (Siobhan Down) / friend

My Brother Charlie (Holly Robinson Peete et al) / picture book / sibling

General / Literary Fiction

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Jonathan Safran Foer) / main character

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (Mark Haddon) / main character

House Rules (Jodi Picoult) / mother

Saving Max (Antoinette van Heugten) / mother

*My choice of label is determined by the term used within the book and also sometimes by when the book was published. (In May 2013, upon the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-Fifth Edition [DSM-V], the term ‘Asperger syndrome’ was no longer used; the term “Autism Spectrum Disorder” replaced autistic disorder, PDD-NOS, and Asperger syndrome.) A book released after May 2013 may use either the older or the newer diagnostic label.
